What Type of Body Do I Have? Tips to Dress According to Your Curves and Look Spectacular
There are different body types: hourglass, pear, apple, straight and inverted triangle. Identify your body type to dress and look better!
Wide shoulders or hips, more or less curved, enviable legs, neckline or arms. We help you identify the different body types and what clothes to wear with each one to flatter your figure or those of the clients you dress. ;)
The best way to define your body type is to look in the mirror in tight clothing and identify its shape. What stands out more? The shoulders, the hips, the waist. The measurements are not exact since some of us are more round and others more oval. Check out the different shapes and remember what clothes made you look better in the past.
Hourglass or eight body type
In this body type, the shoulders are the same width as the hips and a marked waist. If you have this body type, these are some tips to look perfect:
- Take advantage of skirts that mark your waist and those that are tight at the hips. A midi skirt this season will be ideal for you.
- Try to avoid bright colors and large prints on the bottom and square clothing shapes like boxes.
- If your waist is very defined, take advantage of it. Any coat or dress that has a belt or bow at the waist will be a good ally.
If your body is hourglass shaped but with a bust, here are some additional tips.
A marked waist, the upper part heavier than the hips are characteristics of this body type. To look perfect:
- Tops with V-necklines that are not too deep or wide. For everything that marks straight lines, give it a resounding yes. For example, a thin, fallen shawl or a flyaway or draping front cardigan will make your bust look smaller.
- Yes to jeans with wide or straight sleeves. Yes to the charges and definitely yes to the flared or A-line skirts.
- Don't forget the halter tops! They will highlight your figure and your arms more, and your bust will look smaller and balanced with your waist.
Triangular or pear-shaped body type
If you have more volume in the lower part of your silhouette. Or your arms are thin and you have a small bust, your body type is like that of a pear. Here the shoulders are narrower than the hips.
- To look perfect, balance the width of your shoulders with your hips and try to visually lengthen and stylize your body.
- Marking the waist is an excellent alternative. Choose dresses or blouses with bows and add a thin belt to your clothes.
- Use plain skirts and pants and prints on top.
- The deep or V-shaped neckline will make you look more stylish.

Oval, round, or apple-shaped body type
Do you have rounded shoulders, waist and hips? Generally, the arms and legs are thin and there is usually volume in the abdomen. Don't despair!
- Avoid very low and very high rises and waists. You must distract your attention from the center of your body.
- Do not wear tight clothing on top.
- Show off your legs and arms! Make the most of sleeveless skirts and blouses. 3/4 sleeves are a trick to make you look more stylish since they cover the roundest part of your arms.
- Take advantage of your bust. Choose clothes with a V-neckline that stylize your neck and show off your chest. Avoid necklines decorated with rhinestones and boat cuts or bare shoulders.
- Say goodbye! to very ornate necklaces and accessories. You should avoid anything that adds volume.
- Choose blouses that fall below the hips. Tunic styles are ideal.
Straight body type
This body type has few curves. YES, I said few, not none. If your body is shaped like a rectangle, you can afford to generate volume in any area. Your waist is not very defined, therefore, you must give the illusion of having it without drawing attention to the lack of it.
- First rule, no details on the waist. Forget about belts, trench coats, pockets at the waist of jackets or wearing a blouse inside your skirt or pants.
- Empire style dresses, tight under the bust and long towards the hips.
- Choose asymmetrical skirts with details at the hem.
- Choose straight, wide-leg or boot leg pants. Find which one suits you best depending on the length of your legs and hips.
- Avoid coats and dresses with crossover necklines. They will make you look even more narrow and square.
Inverted Triangle Body Type
In this body type, the volume is concentrated at the top. The shoulders are wider than the hips. The goal when we dress is to try to balance the curves.
- Choose skirts with volume. The flared or A-line ones are the ones for you. You can also use thick fabrics at the bottom, balloon skirts, pleated skirts, and even light or bright colors. This will visually offset the volume of your top. If your shoulders are just a little wider than your hips, you can wear straight skirts.
- The pants can be either skinny jeans or straight, boot cut, elephant foot or oxford style.
- You can show off bold prints on the bottom, such as horizontal stripes and floral prints.
- Avoid clothes with ruffles and flashy prints on top.
- Avoid wearing shoulder pads on your tops and favor dolman and raglan sleeves that place less emphasis on the shoulders.
- Choose longer jackets and coats and not those that reach the waist so as not to look more square.
Beyond your body type, remember that the tone of the garment is essential when we want to hide our areas with more volume. Dark colors always tend to stylize and visually slim us. Use them in areas where you need to hide your roundness. And remember that if you dress in the same color from head to toe, you will look taller and slimmer! Start practicing and attract everyone's attention!
